On January 8, 2012, Novartis Consumer Health, Inc. recalled an extensive list of Excedrin, Bufferin, Gas-X and NoDoz products due to tablet mix-ups and chipped or broken tablets or gelcaps.
There is a possibility that prescription analgesics may also have been mixed with the recalled products. FDA has asked me to share the following warning:
To ensure continued patient safety and access to needed medicines, FDA and Endo Pharmaceuticals are providing instructions to patients and healthcare professionals on how to identify an incorrect pill in an opioid pain medicine prescription.
We are asking patients to check their medicines to look for any tablet of a different size, shape or color from their regular medicine. If they find any tablets that are different from the rest, they should stop taking their pain medicine and take their medicine to their pharmacy. We are telling patients to look carefully at all of the tablets in their pain medicine bottle. For any questions, patients can also contact Endo Pharmaceuticals at1-800-462-3636 or ask their pharmacist or doctor for additional help in identifying whether there are any problems with their medication. Endo Pharmaceuticals has posted pictures of their opioid analgesic tablets on their webpage to serve as a resource for tablet identification.”
This recall has been brewing stealthily and steadily since July 2011, when FDA issued a scathing report on the Quality Systems at Novartis Consumer’s Lincoln (Nebraska) plant.

I was a long haul trucker and I hurt my neck and bought Exceddrin for the pain so I cojuld return home. It relieved the pain all the way from Indiana to Massachusetts;

You can get a generic “excedrin” at CVS or Costco. The ingredients are 250 aspirin, 250 Acetaminophen plus caffeine. It works exactly like Excedrin.

I take 2 excedrin migraines for my headaches and 1 excedrin PM at night to help me sleep. Hopefully these will go back on the market very soon. In the meantime, I take 3, yes 3 aleves for my headaches and they do help but takes longer to work. I want my excedrins back. The sooner the better.

You all realize that all the excedrin products r the same, the names r different. I have been taking excedrin for years n tried different types n I find them to all be the same, so I stick with the extra strength n it does the job for headaches n all my other pains I have. No other products work for me. I’m surprised how many people didn’t know about the recall. I work at a retail store n knew bout recall from news reports n I tell people bout the recall n am asked when it will be back on the shelf. i suffer from meniargis too so i understand your pain! when i get mine i lose my vision beforehand so it’s really scary. i decided that i had enough and i went to the doctor and they gave me prescription migraine medication. you shouldn’t have to live with that pain and there are medications that should help. definetly go to a doctor and try to record the dates of your meniargis, mine happen around the time of my period. i hope you feel better =).

How soon will Excedrin be back on the shelf? I suffer from MS, Degenerate Disk Disease and Psoriatic Arthritis. No over the counter medicine helps me with my migranes like Excedrin. I also use the Excedrin back and body for my arthritis. I don’t always want to take a pain pill and sometimes the pain is severe to add the Excedrin with my pain med. Here’s what we need to do: post as many recommendations for alternatives as possible. This will help Novartis understand that continued delay will erode their market.
There are some recommendations in earlier posts. Here’s my alternative for Extra Strength Excedrin: 1 asprin, 1 Tylenol, and a cup of coffee. This approach works fairly well, and contains the same ingredients as Excedrin.

I am definitely with all of you on when will excedrin be back. I am a migraine sufferer for more than 15 years. Although nothing really compares to excedrin, you can try these things in the meantime: try Tylenol rapid release with a little coffee (the caffeine helps speed the process); try little corner stores or pharmacies to see if they sell the single envelope excedrin packs that contain only 2 pills for no more than $1.00. Most people still carry those because you can’t mix pills in them (at least that’s what I was told in a pharmacy that carried them). Hope this helps guys. It has gotten me thru my headaches in this trying excedrin recall time.

Looking for info on when Exedrine is coming back and I stumbled on this site. I’m glad to know that it’s not just me bugging out about not having Exedrines. Hopefully they will be back in June. Like many of you I have been searching furiously for a comparable headache reliever and I have found just 2. They aren’t as good as Exedrine of course but they work in a pinch. The first is called Headache Relief made by DrugStore brand and can be found in Exxon stores and some BP stations, they come in a tube container with 10 tablets per container for about $2.49. The second is called Pain Aid and is distributed by Zee Medical. 100-2 tablet packs can be purchased on their website for $14.30, you will need to create an account, I haven’t ordered any yet so I’m not sure about S/H charges, I was getting mine from work. Hope this helps.

I have been using Exedrin Migraine for as long as it has been made. I get excruciating headaches sometimes and it is the ony OTC brand that works. By the way, have been using CVS brand and have not had any problems. But will keep an eye on my blood pressure.

Found the answer!!! go to Google & Lincoln Nebraska newspapers. Lincoln Journal. (Nebraska is where Excedrin is made) they have an article stating the plant needs $120 million in upgrades to pass FDA safety codes and Exedrin will not be bottled again until MID-JUNE. I could just strangle that novartis or whoever they are. Anyway I get a little paniced because I am about out. I have tryed generics and none worked,but I have nothing to loose. I’m across the street from walgreens so I get their generic. BOOM, it worked. Thought I was wasting money but its worked 2 days in a row. Give it a try. Nobody is a bigger “excendrin only ” user than me and walgreens brand worked. Only product I ever used other than exceeding that took my headache away.

I really hope someone from Novartis can respond soon with positive affirmation that this med. will be coming back by mid-year or not. If people can at least know, then they can act accordingly. There are so many people that need this medication to ward off debilitating migraines that affect work, their social lives, and just plain ability to move their body. I believe the FDA owes a response in addition to Novartis. For the FDA to not even be concerned with a response for “We the people” shows how much they care about the hurting of our society. If THEY are looking out for our well being, then THEY would also care about a response timing.

When will extra strength excederin going to be back on the market? I am 73 yrs old and that is the only medication i take. It keeps my arthritis from hurting.been taking it for years and it seams to be the only thing that works.

Try using Walmart equate Midol. It has 60 mg of caffeine and 500 mg of acetaminophen and take an aspirin. Seems to have the same effect as Exciderin Migraine. The only difference is the 15mg of Pyrilamine Maleate, which is a Diuretic.

This really stinks Exedrin is the only one that helps with my headaches. Now its gone. I’ve tried Anacin, it doesn’t work. I’ve tried genric Excedrin, they don’t work. I’m told its the genitic make up of the drug, how its formulated. That makes sense. All I know is my headache needs Exedrin NOW!

I feel the same way. I feel like I lost my best friend. Excedrin is the only thing I can take to get rid of my annoying headaches. I have been taking them for a little over 30 years too.

Yes please focus on the round tablets. They do seem to work better. And when will they be back on store shelfs????????? I have been taking them for over thirty years and I take one every morning to avoid a headache and for my joint pain . I LOVE EXECEDRIN!!!!!!! Please put it back in the stores soon. My eighty four year old dad takes it also and he wants it back.

I had a MAJOR headache this morning…alas no Excedrine. What to do, I drank two expressos and took two extra strength Tylenol and it worked. I am headache free. Caffeine does wonders for a headache. Hey maybe I’m on to something…LOL Hope this helps someone else.

Be careful! You should not be taking Excedrin on a daily basis. You could develop kidney problems, liver problems, or analgesic rebound headache. 3 days out of 7 would be the maximum. You need to have a 2nd choice handy that is not aspirin containing. If you have chronic daily headache, you need to see a neurologist specializing in headache. My best wishes for you. I know this is not easy, but you may need professional help getting control of your headaches.

I would NOT take excdedrin manrgiae because it is full of caffeien, and when it wears off you are susceptible to rebound migraine, which sounds like the pressure you are feeling on the right side.I have an excellent headache doctor/neurologist, and sounds like you might want to find the same, if you do not have one already.I am attaching a link to the national headache foundation which might contain some helpful information for you until you get to a new doctor.Good luck, and sorry for your pain.

Excedrine extra strength has been the only product that I have taken for both severe headaches and arthritis that has been helpful that I have taken for a long time. Nothing has even come close to helping my pain. Please bring the product back.
