United States
- Food Safety Recall: Castellini Produce recalls Fresh Jalapenos (2#, 10# and 40# packs; Packages bear the name Professional Produce of Florida/South Florida Produce; Lot Nos. 1977434, 1977911, 1978565, 1976393, 1976549, 1976551, 1977220, 1977514, 1977845, 1978122, 1978125, 1978930, 1976774, 1976786, 1977289, 1977310, 1977906, 1977913, 1978563, 1978574, 1979025, 1979034, 1976509, 1977743, 1978618, 280104C07), after routine tests results showed the possible presence of Salmonella. The product was distributed to five US Foods divisions between March 9th and March 24th, 2012.
- Public Health Alert: USDA warns the public that ground beef patties manufactured by New Food Classics and associated with a Canadian health alert may have been exported to the USA. Products imported into the United States include Prime Rib Beef Patties (10-lb boxes containing 8-oz patties; Product code 55317; Production code 11 NO 22) and Prime Rib Beef Patties (10-lb boxes containing 71g patties; Product code 55391; Production codes 11 SE 01 or 12 JA 04). The products, which may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, were produced by New Food Classics (CFIA Establishment 761) and were imported into the USA by Sysco Food Services to a distribution center in Blaine, WA for use by food service institutions.
Canada
- Allergy Alert: Lordford Inc. recalls Koh-Kae brand Peanuts Shrimp Flavour Coated (230g or 240g; UPC 8 852023 665481; All lot codes) and Koh-Kae brand Peanuts Chicken Flavour Coated (230g or 240g; UPC 8 852023 665399), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled products were distributed in Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia, and may have been sold nationally.
- Food Safety Recall Update: Canadian Food Inspection Agency announces that two additional products have been added to the New Food Classics recalled products list, because they may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The affected products are Ground Beef – Fresh (9.07 kg pkg; Est. No. 761; Product code 55362; Production date code format 11 JL 01 through 12 FE 16; Prepared fresh for Five Guys Enterprises, but also sold frozen), and Country Fried Style Breaded Beef Steak Chopped and Formed (3.9kg pkg; Est. No. 530; Product code 50988; Production date code format 08-SEP-11 through 17-Feb-12; Prepared using recalled product from Est. 761). The products were distributed nationally through restaurant and institutional establishments.

This major recall of beef patties once again demonstrates that all discussions about food safety and/or food unsafety have to be carried out keeping in mind that:
The food supply has not been safe in the past, is not safe now and probably won’t be safe in the future. Anything less is plain truthiness.
I just stumbled onto a copy of ‘Instructions to Food and Drug Inspectors of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’. It illustrates just how little real progress has been made since it was issued in 1910 – that is June 1, 1910.
